Terms of Use
The German version of these terms is the legally binding one. This translation is provided for your convenience.
These terms apply to the use of the iPhone app Brief-ly. The most important point first: Brief-ly reads, translates, summarises and files. Brief-ly is not legal or tax advice and can make mistakes. The original letter always counts.

2. What Brief-ly does
Brief-ly turns photos of your letters into PDF files, has an AI service read the content automatically, translates and summarises it in your language, detects dates and deadlines, adds them to your calendar and reminders if you wish, and files the letters in folders. The app is an aid for understanding and organising. The results are generated fully automatically and are not checked by a human.
3. No legal or tax advice
Brief-ly does not provide legal services within the meaning of the German Legal Services Act (Rechtsdienstleistungsgesetz, RDG) and no tax advice. The app does not examine your case legally, does not assess whether a claim, accusation or decision is justified, does not estimate chances of success and does not recommend whether you should object, pay, admit or deny anything. Summaries, translations and “next step” notes only reflect what the letter says.
Brief-ly does not replace a lawyer, a tax adviser or an advice centre. For letters from courts, the police, public prosecutors, law firms, debt collection agencies, bailiffs or the immigration office, and for fines, lawsuits, payment orders (Mahnbescheide), terminations or other matters with legal consequences, you should get professional advice in good time.
4. No guarantee of accuracy or completeness
AI systems can misread or mistranslate text, leave out important points or classify things wrongly. In particular, deadlines can be missing or calculated incorrectly; deadlines that Brief-ly calculates itself (e.g. an objection period from an assumed delivery three days after the letter date) are only estimates. Calendar entries, reminders and notifications are an aid; their creation and delivery are not guaranteed. Please therefore read every important letter yourself or have it translated, and check amounts, dates and deadlines against the original. You are responsible for meeting deadlines and for decisions you make based on a letter.
5. Your obligations
Only scan letters you are allowed to process – letters to you or to people and companies you may act for or whose consent you have. Do not use the app for unlawful purposes and do not try to technically circumvent the usage limits.
6. Free use and subscription
A limited number of letters can be read for free; the current allowance is shown in the app. Beyond that there is a subscription that is purchased, billed, renewed and cancelled through Apple’s App Store. Price, term and any trial period are shown before purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it in the iPhone settings at least 24 hours before it ends. Apple’s terms also apply, including the Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA). To prevent abuse, the number of letters per day may be limited.
7. Liability
We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under the German Product Liability Act and to the extent of any guarantee given.
In the case of slight negligence we are only liable if we breach an essential contractual obligation whose fulfilment makes proper use of the app possible in the first place and on whose observance you may regularly rely (cardinal obligation). In that case liability is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this type of contract. For free use, we are only liable for intent and gross negligence.
Because the app expressly does not provide legal advice and the content is generated automatically (sections 3 and 4), the accuracy and completeness of a summary, translation or deadline calculation is not one of the essential contractual obligations. For disadvantages that arise because you rely on a summary instead of checking the original letter or getting advice, we are therefore only liable under paragraph 1.
8. Availability
We strive for trouble-free operation but cannot guarantee constant availability. The app uses third-party services (e.g. Anthropic, Cloudflare, Apple) whose availability we cannot influence. Your files are stored on your iPhone; please back up important documents additionally, e.g. via iCloud.
9. Privacy
How we handle your data is described in the privacy policy.
10. Changes
We may change these terms if the app or the legal situation changes. We will inform you about material changes in the app; you then confirm them before your next scan.
11. Law and dispute resolution
German law applies. If you are a consumer, you retain the protection of the mandatory provisions of the country in which you have your habitual residence. We are neither obliged nor willing to take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.
